Yaqui Animal Rescue is an 80-acre ranch in Sullivan City, Texas named in honor of founder Sonia Venecia’s Yaqui Indian heritage. This non-profit, no-kill animal rescue currently cares for 250 animals, including cats, dogs, horses, cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, ducks, and turtles.
Operating as a registered 105(c)(3) since 2013, Sonia and her team have rescued thousands of stray animals over the years. With the help of Buzz to the Rescues, the Yaqui Animal Rescue continues to fulfill its mission by caring for animals in and around the Rio Grande Valley area and connecting them to forever homes.
Only 10 miles from the Mexican border, the Rio Grande Valley has an overwhelming number of abandoned animals. To help rescue and care for those unwanted creatures, the Yaqui Animal Rescue began their work by cobbling together a number of different tools, including:
Unfortunately, the complexity involved in rescuing and housing so many animals made it impossible to continue without some kind of organized animal rescue software system.
Buzz is a unique offering, a one-stop-shop for rescues in need. By having everything included in one package (including a website), rescues and sanctuaries like Yaqui are able to utilize Buzz’s plug-and-play functionality to get up and running quickly with a minimal learning curve.
According to Yaqui’s Media Director Alyssa Ceronni, the fact that everything came packaged together was a huge help. “You have the adoption applications, the volunteer applications, the foster applications…we were able to customize them quickly and get started, which was very helpful to us.”

One of the reasons Buzz is so effective is because of the approach to customer service. At Yaqui, whenever a volunteer needed help with something, Buzz was there. From assisting with ongoing training to building out event or donations pages for upcoming fundraisers, Buzz even provides help by guiding rescues with SEO best practices and advice. Buzz has always been devoted to providing the advice and support rescues need to get the job done.
Buzz also made Yaqui feel like a more professional organization. According to Media Director Alyssa, the functionality of Yaqui’s new Donation page was also hugely helpful, bolstering their credibility. “It helped us a lot to be able to give people a receipt after they donate. People feel more comfortable donating than they used to.”
Buzz also helped Yaqui get more organized. “Before Buzz, we didn't even have all of our pets on the website,” explained Ceronni. “Now it's a priority that every single animal we have goes into the system before we start posting them to social media.” Having good descriptions to go with animal photos and a strong Call to Action was also critical, suggestions and best practices Buzz was happy to share as well.
Whether you are upgrading from spreadsheets and emails or moving over from another animal rescue platform that is not meeting your needs, it’s easy to get started with Buzz.
It only involves four steps, and although we can move at whatever pace you choose, if you’re in a hurry Buzz can be implemented in as little as a weekend! Most, however, decide to take their time over the course of a few weeks. The process includes the following central steps:
Buzz is happy to provide extensive training to all who need it, and our post-implementation support is second to none. Even if a rescue hires new staff members years later, Buzz provides all the training resources rescues need. Our goal is to ensure that everyone on your team is able to effectively use the tools to save more animals, no matter when they join your organization.
Partnering with Buzz has transformed the way Yaqui Animal Rescue operates. By leveraging Buzz’s technology, they were able to simplify their lives, reduce their stress, and free up valuable time so they could increase donations and build a larger volunteer community.
